PETER SYDNEY VALLANCE
1926 – 2008
Peter Sydney Vallance died on the 12th day of August, 2008 after a
protracted decline, leaving his family the gift of grace in the face of
adversity.
Peter was born November 20th, 1926 in Calgary. He graduated from the
University of Alberta with his Law Degree in 1949 and articled to his
father Sydney Vallance Q.C.. Peter was an ‘everyman’s’ lawyer and
touched many lives in the course of his 40-year career in Calgary. He
retired in 1988 with his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years,
Jean Cameron Vallance (nee McFarlane), to their home on Lake Windermere,
where they pursued their successful craft business for many more years.
Known for his generosity of spirit and good will, Peter’s first love
after Jean and the family was the outdoors. He was an avid back country
adventurer and pioneer heli-skier. Peter and Jean traveled the remote
north for thousands of miles by canoe. His adventures took him around
the world.
Peter was a member of the Alpine Club of Canada for more than 50 years
and a member of Columbia Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M., Invermere, B.C.
Peter is survived by his devoted wife, his son David who practises law in
Calgary, his son Bruce who is a ceramic artist living in Victoria, his
daughter Barbara who practises law in Fort Macleod, and son-in-law Larry
Zehanoviz. He also leaves eight grandchildren, Meghan, Matthew,
Patrick, Annie, Peter, David, Sam & Kallie, and his sister Jean Gill.
“Hail fellow and well met.” He loved and was loved and will be missed by
all who knew him.
