Donald Stuart
1927 – 2011
Donald Stuart, master fisherman, passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook on April 4, 2011.
Don was born on October 17, 1927 to Harry and Katie Stuart. Don was raised in Kimberley and enjoyed a wonderful childhood full of adventures. At the tender age of 13 he met the love of his life Jean Bernard, and other than his military service during WWII, he and Jean were never separated until her untimely death in 2009.
Don apprenticed in carpentry at Cominco following the war and his work took them up the valley to Giant Mascot Mine, Radium and Brisco. In 1958 Don and Jean took over the Brisco General Store where they raised their four children. His love of the outdoors has been the source of many great stories over the years about skiing, camping, floating down the Columbia River and especially fly fishing!
In 1982 Don and Jean retired to Kimberley where he enjoyed playing music at the seniors’ dances and spent even more time tying flies, making flyboxes and of course fishing! Just a few years ago they moved to Cranbrook.
Don is survived by his sister Elsie Fisher, his children Ken, Alan, Dale Dodd and Diane Mattson, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother George and his beloved wife Jean.
Thanks Dad for your wisdom, gentle guidance
