Abbotsford Senior is closed tomorrow, but counsellors will be available.
One person was arrested after a stabbing at Abbotsford Senior Secondary around 2 p.m. left two students with serious injuries that turned fatal for one.
The school was placed on lockdown and access to Abbotsford middle school was also limited. Around a dozen police cars were on scene, and paramedics and fire crews were also present.
Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said officers were called just after 2 p.m. and told someone in the school had a weapon and there were one or two victims.
When they arrived, they found two people who had been wounded. Police located and arrested a suspect “almost immediately,” MacDonald said.
The condition of the two victims wasn’t known, though both were airlifted for further treatment.
A graphic video circulating online Tuesday purportedly showed several seconds of the incident in the rotunda at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Police urged people to neither view nor share the video.
A staging area for parents was set up at the nearby Abbotsford Arts Centre, at 2329 Crescent Way. Police conducted a search of the school, but MacDonald said it was “precautionary” in nature. The lockdown at the middle school was lifted at about 4 p.m., and at the high school at about 4:30.
“We are co-operating in an active investigation with APD,” an Abbotsford school district spokesperson told The News.
Abbotsford News reporter Vikki Hopes described a chaotic scene at the school, with dozens of parents – including one in emotional distress – waiting for their children.
Outside, repeated loudspeaker notices advising students to stay in their classrooms could be heard.
