The Village of Canal Flats will be the site of the second annual Curling Fun Spiel this year in March.
The tournament will be held at the Canal Flats arena, on March 18 to March 20.
The Canal Flats Community Group will be hosting the event.
The community group has recently met to begin the process for incorporating as a non-profit group provincially.
After this has been done, the community group will donate 2010’s collected money to the Canal Flats Fire Department.
“The event is open for all people who love or want to learn curling,” said Shawn Doherty, president of the Canal Flats Community Group.
The Fun Spiel will be a 32-team bonspiel, which was the case in 2010 as well. Teams who participated in last year’s tournament can expect to receive a call to join in on 2011’s event, and new teams can sign up as well.
Doherty hopes that next year’s event will boast an even larger amount of teams participating.
Canal Flats council waived the arena rental costs in 2010, according to Doherty. “They donated the ice time, which really helped out,” he said.
Council has yet to waive the costs for 2011, however.
A refreshment garden is planned for the bonspiel. The community group has requested permission to pursue a liquor license for the garden from the Canal Flats council, who approved the request.
“It’s a great way to meet old friends and make new ones,” said Doherty of the event. “It’s a great community event, and getting together with everyone brings pride into our community.”
