Councillors for the village of Radium Hot Springs were a bit perplexed by a recent request for sewer service from Radium Resort.
The village is being asked to provide sewer service for the golf course, lodge, apartments and homes currently on the Radium Resort lands, as well as up to 900 more homes the company hopes to build on the property over the next 20 years.
In return, the resort — which is outside of the village’s jurisdiction — is offering to let the community collect development cost charges for sewer service when new units are built on the site.
“Based on the current monthly rate structure for sewage service, the existing and new development would represent an additional $150,00 in annual revenues,” resort general manager Wilda Schab wrote in a letter to council. Schab said the resort would also take responsibility for constructing the pumping station and lines needed to hook up with the village’s system.
“Obviously it came as a bit of a surprise to us all, I think,” mayor Dee Conklin said of the request, before suggesting council refer the matter back to staff to get more information. A report on the issue will likely be presented at council’s March 28 meeting.
