Serving Canadian police officer and book author John Smith will be appearing at The Book Bar in Invermere on July 2, from noon to 4 p.m.

Smith will be conducting a book-signing for his book called The Wolf and The Sheepdog.

The book deals with the harder, darker side of police work that Smith has encountered during his time as an officer.

“Through graphic and raw writing I allow the reader to hear the language that is used with the people I deal with, the smells, the sights and the sounds associated with tough, raw calls,” Smith said of the book.

“All these senses are tied into the emotions that erupt dealing with the calls themselves, the never ending looming management hammer and lax criminal justice system.”

The book deals with the “rare ten per cent” of the hard career criminals Smith has dealt with.

“My stories contain the violence and pain that reflect the current state our streets are in,” said Smith.

Through the book’s raw, harsh atmospheric writing Smith hopes to break the policing stereotype often seen on television and bring readers into the true world beyond.

“Through this book you will see the dark side of predatory human nature, failing criminal justice systems, at work politics and critical incident stress cannot be all that different from place to place,” said Smith.
