A visibly upset Chilliwack MLA John Martin said Thursday he has terminated the employment of a constituency assistant and reported apparent financial irregularities to the local RCMP.

Martin told reporters at the B.C. legislature he discovered the irregularities after a new financial management system was installed at his Chilliwack office.

A new system was put in place for MLA offices after Victoria-Swan Lake MLA Rob Fleming discovered money missing from his constituency office. Fleming’s former constituency assistant pleaded guilty to fraud over $5,000 in October 2016.
