The Windermere Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 71 is proposing the District of Invermere co-sponsor with the Legion an expansion of last summer’s Legion Market.

The expansion news was presented by Legion President Rick Jarrett through an official news release. However, Jarrett was unavailable for comment, as the details of the expansion have not yet been confirmed by Invermere council, and he did not want to speak on the matter at this time.

The planned, expanded, all-inclusive family-oriented market has a potential for up to 100 exhibitors, according to the news release. The market will close 13th Street every Saturday from June 11 through to September 10 in anticipation for the summer season.

Last summer’s Legion Market ran in front of the branch office at 525 13th Street, with 19 vendors selling their wares.

The market is aimed to provide an opportunity for local artisans and crafters to show and sell their wares, and may draw visitors to the Invermere “core” every Saturday, which also enhances opportunity for local merchants.

Community groups, such as service clubs, youth groups and non-profit organizations, will be provided market space free of charge to promote community awareness.

The news release states that for the Royal Canadian Legion to manage and operate this market, the local branch will be able to continue to provide services and support to the community.

The Royal Canadian Legion has been providing services to veterans, seniors, youth and the community for 85 years. Last year the Windermere Branch 71 of the Royal Canadian Legion donated a total of $15,000 in scholarships, fire rescue vehicles, youth programs and to the Honour House.
