The District of Invermere will take responsibility for maintaining the Athalmer Trail for the moment, while the incomplete route leading to the crossroads remains in bureaucratic limbo.
Invermere council agreed at its most recent meeting to spend up to $1,000 to have the path cleared of weeds this fall and swept of gravel in the spring.
Though trail construction was overseen and funded by a number of groups — including Invermere, the Regional District of East Kootenay, the Columbia Basin Trust and the Ministry of Transportation — no maintenance funding was set aside for the project, partly because it’s still considered under construction by some of the groups.
